Part Four of Four - Automobile Timeline

1911 Electric starter introduced

Charles Kettering introduces the electric starter. Until this time engines had to be started by hand cranking. Critics believed no one could make an electric starter small enough to fit under a car’s hood yet powerful enough to start the engine. His starters first saw service in
1912 Cadillacs.
  • I selected this point because I felt this would be a big help to cars because it would be very had to start them without electric start.

1914 First car body made entirely of steel

Dodge introduces the first car body made entirely of steel, fabricated by the Budd Company. The Dodge touring car is made in Hamtramck, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.
  • This point is very interesting because an all steel body would be a great help in the safety of a car. Before without a body in an accident you would be very hurt.

1926 First power steering system

Francis Wright Davis uses a Pierce-Arrow to introduce the first power steering system. It works by integrating the steering linkage with a hydraulics system.

  • I picked this point because I feel power steering would help the handling and the safety of cars.

1970s Air bags become standard

Air bags, introduced in some models in the 1970s, become standard in more cars. Originally installed only on the driver's side, they begin to appear on the front passenger side as well.

  • I chose this point because Air bags greatly help the safety of cars and will reduce the number of injuries in car accidents.

Henry Ford Model T

1. Instead of the workers moving, the line moved and the workers stayed in place.

2. He treated them fairly and gave them an affordable wage.

3.
The Model T cost a little over $1000.  The Model T was manufactured for the common man.

4.A little over $365. I think it dropped so much because As the Model T became the main mode of transportation,

5. People could travel for pleasure and go wherever they want, whenever they want.
